Ask political leaders to stop plastic pollution

Plastic pollution is increasing at an alarming rate and is making us sick.

Nearly 90 per cent of plastic waste in Canada ends up in landfills, incinerators, lakes, parks and oceans. Plastic pollution is toxic – it hurts the wildlife we love, the planet we live on and, ultimately, us.

We can all take individual action to limit our plastic consumption, but that by itself won’t solve the problem. Around the world, plastic production and pollution are on the rise.

How can we put a stop to plastic pollution?

We need to protect vulnerable communities from toxic emissions and waste.

We need to eliminate microplastic contamination.

We need to expand the ban on unnecessary single-use plastics and prohibit harmful chemicals in plastics.

We need a strong global plastics treaty that limits the amount of plastic produced worldwide.

Who is standing in the way?

The fossil fuel industry which benefits from plastic production is exerting powerful opposition to the development of a global plastics treaty to end plastic pollution. At the most recent round of negotiations, the world failed to agree on a treaty.

But 175 countries initially agreed to negotiate a treaty and negotiations will resume in 2025, this time they must not falter.

Meanwhile, Canada is heading into an election. No matter who is elected, we need Canada to push for a strong international agreement to end plastic pollution and limit plastic production for once and all.
