Exposing fossil fuel disinformation, one lie at a time

Text reading ' exposing fossil fuel disinformation one lie at a time.'

Big Oil lobbyists have enlisted politicians to help spread disinformation. Some has become so prevalent that it’s increasingly difficult for people to tease apart facts from falsehoods. We’re setting things straight about lies being told in this important time in Canadian politics.

In this critical decade for climate action, we must drive down emissions from all sectors and shift away from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy. As Canada’s biggest polluter, the oil and gas industry must be held to account.

Big Oil won’t go down without a fight, though. One way industry is fighting the transition to clean energy is by spreading disinformation to turn Canadians against necessary climate action that would make life more affordable, healthier and fairer for everyone.

Big Oil lobbyists have enlisted politicians to help spread disinformation. Some has become so prevalent that it’s increasingly difficult for people to tease apart facts from falsehoods. We don’t believe that politicians should be allowed to spread lies and mislead their constituents, but we can’t stop them.

In our efforts to expose the fossil fuel sector’s toxic behaviour, we’re setting things straight about lies being told in this important time in Canadian politics. People need to know the truth so they can act accordingly.

Canada's oil production has reached record highs in recent years. For the fourth consecutive year, production of crude oil and equivalent products reached a record high in 2024. Last year also saw an all-time high for exports, with a five per cent increase from the previous year. Completion of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion in May 2024 has facilitated increased access to international markets, with exports to countries other than the United States rising by 59.8 per cent. C-69 is legislation designed to ensure that major development projects consider the effects on biodiversity, water, climate change, communities and Indigenous rights. It is not designed to stop nor has it ever stopped any pipeline or development project. The Northern Gateway and Energy East pipelines were cancelled before Bill C-69 became law in 2019. The Trans Mountain expansion and Coastal GasLink pipelines have proceeded under the broader framework of federal review.

A net-zero Canada will see 700,000 more energy jobs than exist today as clean energy job gains outpace fossil fuel job losses. It is entirely possible for Canada to have reliable, affordable, 100 per cent emissions-free electricity in Canada by 2035 while creating thousands of good jobs and helping Canada meet its international climate obligations.

Investing in the transition to a clean economy will modernize Canada’s energy sector while securing a prosperous future for workers and communities alike.

Climate policies, regulations and laws that prevent the fossil fuel sector from running roughshod over our communities, climate, wildlife and rights are necessary to ensure the safety, health and security of all Canadians. Industry’s lies are misleading well-intentioned citizens and preventing urgent progress on climate action.
